La seva recerca se centra en l&#8217;an\u00e0lisi aplicada del discurs, l&#8217;ensenyament i l&#8217;aprenentatge de lleng\u00fces estrangeres, el multiling\u00fcisme i la compet\u00e8ncia intercultural. Adopta un enfocament qualitatiu (etnografia socioling\u00fc\u00edstica i an\u00e0lisi del discurs) per estudiar el desenvolupament de la compet\u00e8ncia multiling\u00fce i intercultural en el context de pol\u00edtiques ling\u00fc\u00edstiques espec\u00edfiques a l&#8217;educaci\u00f3 secund\u00e0ria i terci\u00e0ria. Ha publicat 8 llibres i nombrosos articles de revistes i cap\u00edtols de llibres. Josep Maria Cots ha estat investigador principal en diversos projectes de recerca finan\u00e7ats competitius.
